Rio Grande Southern US Mail car at Colorado Railroad Museum at Golden CO

A Galloping Goose Rail Car at the Colorado Railroad Museum, Golden, Colorado. Seven of these were built between 1931 and 36 by the Rio Grande Southern Railroad and operated until the end of service in 1952. They were built to help the company stave off bankruptcy. Hauling freight and passengers was an expensive business and the big locomotives too their toll on the track. They were adapted for use on the railroad from the automobiles of their day. Conversion was simple and cheap. The first Goose was made from a 1931 Buick 4 door sedan. The early "Geese" also carried the mail. However the contract was lost in 1950 and the company tried to concentrate on the tourist market. However this wasn't profitable and the service only lasted 2 years. Three examples of these can be seen at the museum in Golden, including this mailcar.
