At the age of twenty-one he commenced for himself and was successful to a moderateextent, adding yearly to his income by close application andeconomy in expenses. He continued to reside at Waitsfield until 1855, when hemoved to Montpelier, Vt.; was engaged there in banking, andfor nine years in private banking at Freeport, 111. He was chair-man of a committee for locating and erecting a building for anacademy and graded school large enough to accommodate thewhole village, about five hundred scholars.
