At the age of twenty-one he commenced for himself and was successful to a moderateextent, adding yearly to his income by close application andeconomy in expenses. He continued to reside at Waitsfield until 1855, when hemoved to Montpelier, Vt.; was engaged there in banking, andfor nine years in private banking at Freeport, 111. He was chair-man of a committee for locating and erecting a building for anacademy and graded school large enough to accommodate thewhole village, about five hundred scholars. After its completion,which took two years, he was elected chairman of the schoolcommittee, which position he held for several years, until he de-clined a further election.
