Exces-sive numbers of certain speciesoften appear as the result of alack of the natural enemies thatexercise a checking influence overthem. In Michigan, I found therose-bug especially abundant inJune, 1906. Originally, it wasdoubtless a frequenter of the wildrose, but owing, in some degree atleast, to the cultivation of and the consequent spread-ing of domestic plants, it has somultiplied and changed its habitsthat few orchard trees escape its depredations. Its feedinghabits also cause it to attack the grape and forest trees, as wellas a number of shrubs. I have found it especially troublesometo grapes from the fact that it feeds on the blossoms. Simi-larly, in the year mentioned above, the young peaches wereattacked, materially affecting this crop of fruit.
