Russian troops crossing the Amu Darya River, 1873 (1889). In 1873 the Russian Army crossed the Amu Darya to invade the Central Asian Khanate of Khiva. The city of Khiva fell to the Russians on 28 May and on 12 August a peace treaty was signed establishing Khiva as a Russian protectorate. Found in the collection of the State Central Artillery Museum, St Petersburg.
