Dr. Jameson, Administrator of Rhodesia, wasappealed to for assistance, and left Mafeking with about 500 of his armedpolice and six maxim guns with the intention of marching to short distance from Johannesburg he was encountered by a Burgher force,defeated, and compelled to surre
