Feeling the little fon-tanel, therefore, of triangular shape of small extent,with a coalition of three sutures, you know the situation of the occiput; and feel-ing the greater fontanel of diamond shape of great extent, and of four concur-rent sutures, you know the situation of the face. In ordinary deliveries, thesenice examinations are not required, but in cases of difficulty, where help isrequired, these points should be ascertained if practicable, as without this h Large Fontanel. i Small THE ART OF DELIVERY. 195 knowledge a dexterous and scientific assistance cannot be the face of the child presents, you will not, I trust, confound this pre-sentation with the breech, though the error has been committed. It is roundand soft, and so far it resembles the nates ; but then the nose, the protuberanteyes, and above all, the toothless mouth, readily known, if you have been in thehabit of feeling this cavity, will enable you to distinguish the face. Feeling theeyes, nose, mouth, and forehead, you will not only be able to make out thepresentation but the situation, likewise; the ears, when felt, further assistingyour diagnosis of the position of the head. A forehead presentation is probablymore easily than any other, confounded with a vertex presentation, when youfirst feel it. On examining the forehead, you
