Five centuries agoits palace was built in front of its even then oldoastle, and it had for its first visitors the Kingsof Scotland, who, during the summer months,and also sometimes during the winter season,resorted to it for the purpose of enjoying itsdelightful climate, its translucent waters, andits beautiful soenery. There is no reoord ofthe building of the oastle, whioa still survivesin the square in the centre of the town. The firstmention of it in history is in 1228.
