The metre gauge Brocken railway with one of the steam engines built in 1954 climbs to the top of the Brocken, mountain, Germany

One of the so called new steam engines built in 1954, a close copy of the standard locomotives built in the 1930's. 99 7241 hauls a passenger train on the 1000mm narrow gauge line up the 1 in 30 clime from Wernigerode, Germany, along the former East-West Germany border to the summit of the Brocken mountain (1125m) . The peak of the Brocken, the highest in the Harz Mountains, was a military base which has only been open to the public for a relatively short time. Until reunification the peak was off limits to all but the Soviet Army.
