Iron nail in air. Experiment to show the corrosive effects of different combinations of water and air on iron. Here the nail is in a beaker filled only with air. Iron rusts (corrodes) in the presence of oxygen and water. In air this tends to happen slowly as the water content is quite low. Here the nail is still in the same condition as when it was first placed in the beaker and no rust (iron oxide) has yet formed.
