In some instances that I have seen,one half of a name has the Greek form, and the other halfis in the familiar Latinized form. Nor do I think thatthose people who spell Pheidias for Phidias and Phoibosfor Phoebus will do Greek any great service by this displayof scholarship while the ridiculous English style of pro-nouncing Greek is retained; the popular pronunciationof Phoebus is much nearer the Greek original than thepopular English pronunciation of Phoibos would , however, the Latin name is so altered as to beentirely different from the Greek, I sometimes use theGreek name in preference to the Latin one, as Aphroditefor Venus, Athene for Minerva, and Odysseus for Fig. 1.
