Goblet cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of goblet cells from the small intestine. The goblet cells are seen as grey indentations in the red intestine wall. Goblet cells are modified columnar epithelial cells, which are responsible for the synthesis and secretion of mucus in the small intestine. This specimen is from the duodenum, near where the stomach opens into the intestine. Due to the high acidity of stomach juices, goblet cells are abundant in this area, as mucus is needed to protect the intestinal lining. Magnification: x328 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x540 at 4x5inch size.
