Being not a littlealarmed at this strange apparition, I ranhastily back from the lake, and concealedmyself in a thicket at the distance of sev-eral yards. My position was such, however,as to command a view of the I could soon perceive an undulation on itsglassy surface, and shortly after the bristlyback of the animal became visible. Heleisurely came to the shore, looked around,snuffed the air a little suspiciously, and thenbegan to devour the coarse herbage thatgrew along the margin of the water. Thewhole aspect of this creature was swinish,and I should have set him down as one ofthe hog family, but for two reasons. He 52 DICK BOLDHERO. was twice as big as any specimen of thatrace I had ever seen; and he had a long,flexible snout, which he used like an ele-phants trunk. I watched him narrowly,and never have I seen a more extraordi-nary looking creature. He seemed, indeed,to be half hog and half elephant, thoughhis manners resembled the former ratherthan the latter.
