The wise man ac-cepts the truths so revealed and applies their teaching to the improvement of his work. Wedglok. Another new and valuable addition tothe mechanical appliances used on rail-road work has come suddenly into favor, and bids fair to remain a favorite. Itconsists of a portable one-man drill withpowerful automatic ratchet drilling mech-anism, supported by a crucible steelframe which attaches rigidly to the balland flange of a rail by means of a wedge-locking mechanism. The chief merit of the device is itsready application to the rail without dis-turbing ballast or ties or overlapping therail. The locking mechanism consists offour chisel points in threaded engage-ment with four chisel point bases, eachhaving a 5-degree bevel at the end of thebase suited to receive the point of a5-degree bevel driving wedge; two 5-de-gree bevel driving wedges in a horizontalposition as related to the chisel points and. The blow of a hammercauses the wedge to advance between thebeveled chisel point bases, driving thechisel points into the ball and flange of therail. The drill is instantly and auto-matically centered to the web of the rail, and is absolutely rigid. The feed of thedrill is automatically controlled, and isvariably adjusted by a slight movementof the controlling lever. The feed is rapiduntil the full cut is reached, then the feedis slower until cutting through the oppo-site side of the rail the feed is thrown off, thus avoiding the tendency to gouge andfracture the drill. The apparatus may be put in place andwork begun in a few seconds, and maybe detached almost instantly. It d
