Local distribution depends on local vari- ations, as quality of soil, drainage, exposure, etc. The following is the geographical distribution of native trees in Ontario, and the foreign trees are placed where present experience shows them to belong. This classification is arbitrary in regard to the dividing lines, that is, scattered trees may extend beyond the boundaries given. Species are classed with regard to their northerly limit and those found in the northern area may of course be common in the southern area.
