When we first catalogued " SIDE OATS in 1889 we knew that they were a very productive and sure-crop- ping variety, but did not imagine that such remarkable yields could be secured from a single packet of two ounces of the seed in competition for the cash prizes offered. The first prize of $ was won by W. 0. Ligon, Gloster, Amite Co., Miss., who raised the enormous crop of 439 lbs. 5 ozs. from one 2 oz. package 0/ seed. The second prize of $ cash was 1 awarded to Marshall Hughes, Sattley, Sierra Co., Cal., whose crop weighed 386 lbs., while the third prize was carried offby J. B. Dabney, Savannah, Davis Co., Iowa, with a crop of 354 lbs. The fourth prize of was secured by A. J. Doore, Greene, Butler Co., Iowa, who raised 347 lbs. It seems almost difficult to believe that such enormous yields could be obtained from two ounces of seed from any variety of Oats, but by careful in- vestigation of the reports we are convinced of their truth. It will be seen that the prizes have been distributed over a wide territorv, showing the complete adaptability of the GOLDEN QIANT SIDE OATS to all climates of the United States. Cer- tainly no variety introduced since the advent of Burpee's Welcome Oats, eleven years ago, has received such widespread and unqualified endorsement. A remarkable feature of the GOLDEN GIANT SIDE OATS, worthy of special attention,Ms the fact that a good crop can be grown on poor, thin soil, where most varieties would hardly return the expense of growing and harvesting. They grow four to four and a half feet high, with stifl, bright straw sup- porting the long heads; they stool freely and yield abundantly. The apjiear- ance is well depicted in the illustration herewith, but they frequently grow heads much larger in size. One of our customers, Mr. Omer Mauekmann, Pe Ell,
