But higher honors and responsi-ibilities awaited him, and, being elected to the position of county commis-sioner, he served as such for three years, to the satisfaction of all he was his partys candidate for representative several times, being■defeated by the preponderance of the opposite party. The lady chosen to be his companion and helpmate through life bore themaiden name of Elizabeth Loder. She is a daughter of John and Isabel(Ringland) Loder, pioneers of Fayette county, Indiana. September 25, 1806, he married Isabel Ringland,who was of Irish descent, born May 31, 1785. Three of their chihJren wereborn near Hamilton.—James, Harriet Christy and Mary J. In 1815 theysold out and removing to this section, then called Indiana territory, investedin land in Fayette county. Here he worked at his trade and cleared andcultivated his farm, ultimately becoming well-to-do. While in Ohio he votedfor members of the first constitutional convention, and after coming to thisstate he voted for men who framed our first constitution.
