typical cone shaped roof in The unique zone of Trullis in Alberobello ,Bari, Puglia,Italy which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Alberobello is a small town and commune in the province of Bari in Puglia, Italy It has about 11,000 inhabitants and is famous for its unique TRULLI houses. The Trulli of Alberobello have been part of the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE since 1996. The trulli are whitewashed each year and are curious, round structures with gray, stone, cone-shaped roofs. They are common in the province of Bari and Taranto, yet unknown in the rest of the world. Their design origin is unknown. Some theories date the Trulli back 5000 years, although the favorite story claims that such buildings were first constructed during the Middle Ages. At that time, anyone who built a dwelling on the King's land was heavily taxed. With this in mind, the Pugliesi cleverly devised the drywall stone Trulli solely for purposes of tax evasion. As the story goes, upon word of the taxman's arrival (perhaps by means of a smoke signal), the Trulli were rapidly dismantled into a pile of stones. After the visit was over (and the taxman duped), the homes were re-erected. Fanciful hex signs adorning each home add magic to the already bewitching setting.
