Growing vanilla orchid in a greenhouse, 19th-century illustration. The plant being cultivated here (climbing the pole at centre right and across top) is Vanilla planifolia. This species of vanilla orchid is native to Mexico and Central America. It is one of the main sources for vanilla flavouring (vanillin). Plants such as this, from across the world, were brought back home by explorers and botanists and cultivated in greenhouses such as those at Kew Gardens and other horticultural centres. Sometimes the plants were then cultivated in other suitable climates as an agricultural crop. Artwork published in 1878.
