This genus vi^as established hy Dana, as possessing acharacter intermediate between that of Proto and Ca-prella, from which last it is distinguished by the characterof the appendages of the intermediate segments of thebody. Our knowledge of this genus is, as yet, confined totwo species, one belonging to Britain, the other to SouthAmerica; therefore its geographical range cannot pro-perly be estimated. PROTELLA PHASMA. Cephalon, -nitliout a rostrum, dorsally armed with astrong spine, originating in the posterior margin and directed upwards andforwards. First segment of the pereion dorsally and posteriorly armed witha strong tooth ; second segment similarly armed with a pair near the middle,and one near the posterior margin.
