Kolkata, India, satellite image. North is at top, water is blue, the urban area is under cloud cover giving it a pink appearance and vegetation is green. Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) is located on the east bank of the river Hooghly, in the Ganges Delta, West Bengal, eastern India. The river Hooghly is a distributary of the river Ganges. Kolkata city has an estimated population of around 5 million (2005) making it the fourth largest city in India. Photographed on 17th November 2000.
