Colourful soapbox cars lined up in the pits at the racetrack at Derby Downs, Akron, Ohio, USA in 1964. The venue has been the home track of the ‘All American Soap Box Derby’ since it was built as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project in the 1930s. Traditions abound with famous previous winners of races in the 1940s shown on banners, including Gilbert Kegan (1946), Keith Holmboe (1947), Donald Strub (1948) and Fred Derks (1949). This image is from an old American amateur Kodak colour transparency – a vintage 1960s photograph.

The three-lane asphalt track starts near the top of George Washington Boulevard and drops in a straight line down the wooded hill. There are three car categories/divisions each having a different type of car: Stock, Super Stock, and Masters. This image is from an old American amateur Kodak colour transparency. It will look slightly soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1960s photograph.
