Calvin Gage, son of Richard and Susannah (Chandler) Gage,was born November 17, 1811, in the old Gage house which stoodon the lot now occupied by the residence of Abram Hook; thepresent house being the home of Calvin and his brother, John C,. Calvin Gage. during their later years. Mr. Gage early engaged in the occu-pations of his father, farming and lumbering, but the latter branchtook the largest share of his time and attention. In companywith his brother, John Chandler, he rebuilt the first Gage sawmill 368 HISTORY OF PENACOOK. and did an extensive business for many years. They also builtand operated a large lumber mill at Ottawa, Canada, for a few-years. Calvin was also a member of the firm Gage, Porter & Co.,saw manufacturers, which company was under the management ofhis cousin, Isaac K. Gage, for a long term of years. Mr. Gagewas active in making arrangements for building the first cottonmill in the village. Previous to the purchase by the Fishers, theownership of the land and water power in the central part of thevillage was in several different hands, and Mr. Gage bought upall the different lots, which later were purchased by the FisherB
