Torture of Robert-Francois Damiens (1715-1757). 1879 illustration showing Robert-Francois Damiens being tortured by the Jesuits. Damiens was a French domestic servant who attempted to assassinate King Louis XV of France in 1757. This culminated in his notorious and controversial public execution. He was the last person to be executed in France by drawing and quartering.
