The original plan was drawn by the architect Francisco de Arruda in 1498, but work did not begin untli 1529. The work was continued under Alfonso Alvares, Diogo Marques and Pero Vaz Pereira, being finally inaugurated in 1622 after several stoppages. The overal length is 7790 m. There are 843 arches.
