Fort Denison on Sydney Harbour in Australia, with Farm Cove and the Royal Botanic Gardens in the background. The fort is a former penal site and island on Sydney Harbour, 1km east of Sydney Opera House. Formerly known as 'Pinchgut', it is now a tourist attraction and functions venue. In the year 1900 it became the site of a notorious prank when sailor Charles Lightoller rowed to the island with a plan to fool locals into believing a Boer War raiding party was attacking Sydney. He raised a Boer flag and ignited a cannon on the island. Never suspected or apprehended, he admitted to the stunt in an autobiography and later survived the sinking of RMS Titanic, aboard which he was Second Officer and the most senior crew member to survive.
