Haematite, commonly called 'kidney ore', in its mamillated form. Haematite (iron oxide) varies in colour from metallic black to dull red (both forms being visible here). The soft, red, earthy form is known as red ochre. Haematite is a common and widely-distributed mineral occuring in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. It is the most important ore of iron and has other industrial uses in paint manufacture and polishing compounds.
