It is only neces-sary to examine the pharynx in order to perceive the increased size, andoften the diseased surface, of the tonsils. In some cases the tonsils,though actually but slightly increased in dimension, seem to have under-gone great enlargement, owing to their being rotated forward and in-ward toward the median line. In this way they present their internalsurfaces anteriorly and, stretching across the front of the pharynx, closelyapproach each other. In some persons this movement, which is semi-in-voluntary, occurs to a much greater degree than in others, and in such.
