The river is an important factor in the prosperity of the place, andThunder Bay forms one of the best harbors along the shore. Approach-ing Alpena by water the view is one which, though it may disappointthe searcher for the picturesque, means to the business man energy,bustling life, and commercial prosperity. The singing saws, rattlingtrucks, noisy mill engines, and numberless steam and sailing vessels. Sugar Loaf, Mackinac Island. passing in and out cannot but give to the practical observer the im-pression of a flourishing town; and indeed a happier combination offertile resources and undaunted energy than is centered in this pleasantlittle city of the lakes would be hard to find.
