Its armature will be 15 ft. in diameter, andwill alone weigh 125,000 lbs. The commutator will have 1200bars, each 2 ft. long and 4 ins. deep, and the armature shaft willbe 3 ft. in diameter. The unit will run at 75 The machinewill have an adjustable compound winding, by which its rate ofover compounding may be changed at will to provide for variableloads at different times of the FIG. 3—CROSS ARM AND FIG. 4.—WHEEL COMPLETETREE COMBINED Altogether this machine will represent a development in rail-way practice to higher things than have yet been attained, andthe best results are expected. The contract was placed with theWalker Company after a careful inspection by the engineers ofthe Boston Elevated Railway Company of the large Walker gen-erators in the Kent Avenue station, in Brooklyn, which have beengiving very good service. These generators were put throughsome of the severest tests possible to devise, such as breaking cir-cuit instantly on full load, and no trouble whatever was found, thebrushes even remaining practically sparkless at the break. New Car Trust Tate & Jones, of Pittsburgh, Pa., have made an arrangement witha trust company whereby they are enabled to extend to electricrailways the services of a car trust in financing the purchase ofrolling stock.
