Curlew - Numenius arquata - on grassland searching for food

The Curlew is a wading bird was once a common sight around the wetland and uplands of the UK but numbers are now plummeting. It is estimated that numbers have fallen around 50% in the last 25 years. The UK accounts for around 30% of the total west European breeding population of these birds. They are often seen along shorelines, wetlands and grasslands often near water. They are on the RSPB red list of species giving rise to serious conservation concerns.
