Kids Take the Knee. Black Lives Matters, London Protest, May 2020. My kids. In solidarity. At one level they could not fathom why white police would crush a black man’s neck with a knee until (and beyond) the point of death. But somewhere deep they seemed to know the deal. The flicker of some ancient knowledge that children draw from another place. Besides, I have taught them about slavery. With details. Details the school did not offer in Black History Week (as if one of humankind’s greatest injustices could be summed up in a week). I have told them the names Boris Johnson uses for black people and Muslims. And how the ‘great men’ of British History, such as Churchill, spoke about us. I’m not prepared to cover the ugliness up on behalf of the oppressor, who seeks still, to keep us in our place. My kids weren’t born to stay in their place, nor to keep others in their place. "There is a reason. There is a reason, why no one wants our children - to this day- educated.” (James Baldwin).
