The log or diary of our automobile voyage through Maine and the White Mountains . w it was the worstthing Dad could do. He once told me thathe had never sung but twice in his life;the first time he was taken with a badsickness right after his singing bee andhe was married shortly after his secondattempt, so I feared for results upon thisoccasion. My fears, it turned out, werenot overdrawn. I cannot tell just whathappened or how, but I think that Dadhad gotten so interested in his song thathe became a bit careless, at any rate hegot Billie too close to the side of theroad, and to avoid going down an em-bankment he wheeled suddenly across theroad plumb into a machine headed theother way, and both cars made a head-onacquaintance which jarred all handsdreadfully. I was thrown out and Mothercame tumbling after. I dont know howthe rest got out, whether they fell or gotout themselves. The machines were badlyused up too. When I could move at all, Ifelt sure at least one arm was broken, andI felt like a piece of tough beefsteak thatsome one has pounded the dickens out of 68. Wimw
