Heart disease treatment. Artwork showing three treatments for stenosis (narrowing) of coronary arteries. At top left is balloon angioplasty, where a balloon catheter is inserted into the affected artery and inflated to open the artery up and restore normal blood flow. At top right a stent, a wire mesh tube, is inserted into the artery to keep it open. At bottom a heart bypass graft is performed, where an artery from elsewhere in the body is grafted to the coronary arteries to restore blood flow. The heart may be reached by either a thoracotomy (bottom centre) or through keyhole surgery (bottom right).
