Its petiole has a conical hollow base whichprotects and conceals the growing bud. Winter shows the bud and its encircling leaf scar. The flowers are in heads, staminatedark red, lateral ; pistillate greenish red and terminal. They open in May with the new leaves. The stipules form a sheathwith a leaf-like frill around the top. The seed balls dangle on flexible stems. A central, bony cone is covered with dart-likeseeds, each flying away on a hairy parachute. Sycamore bark is reddish brown on the lower part of the trunk, and brokeninto small plates. Above and on the limbs it comes off in thin, irregular flakes of considerable size, exposing the pale-greenor white under-bark.
