. A life of Napoleon Boneparte:. ions in the present edi-tion have been selected from those used in the first. Thevariety and extent of these illustrations are explained in thePreface to the First Edition here reproduced. The Life ofNapoleon is supplemented in the present work by a sketchof Josephine. The absence of any Life of Josephine in Eng-lish drawn from recent historical investigations is the rea-son for presenting this sketch. Until within a very fewyears the first Empress of the French People has been pic-tured to the world as her grandson Napoleon III desiredthat she appear—a fitting type for popular adoration—moreof a saint and a martyr than of a woman. The presentsketch is an attempt to tell a true story of her life as it isrevealed by the recent diligent researches of Frederic Mas-son and by the numerous memoirs of the periods whichhave appeared, many of them since the passing of the SecondEmpire. If the story as told here is frank, it is hoped by theauthor that it will not be found unsympathetic. IS. CHARLES BONAPARTE, FATHER OF NAPOLEON. BORN 1746; DIED 1785. 16lifeofnapoleonbo00tarb
