Thomas Augustus Jaggar (1871-1953), US volcanologist. Jagger received his PhD from Harvard University in 1897. In 1902 he was part of a group of scientists investigating the volcanic eruptions of Soufriere and Mount Pelee. In 1906, Jagger was appointed head of Massachusetts Institute of Technology's department of geology. He then founded the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, directing it between 1912 and 1940. His retirement was spent in Hawaii where he died. This photograph dates from between 1905 and 1945. It is from the Harris and Ewing Collection, which mostly consists of photographs taken in Washington DC, USA.
