To sit be-neath the shade of those overhanging alders,those graceful hazels, oaks, and silver birches,reclining on some mossy shelf of rock, and watchthe Lyn awhile, foaming here in white cataractsover the boulders in its path, or smoothly glidingover the deep pools, whose tint is touched to abrown-sherry hue by the peat held in solution, isa delight. It is a delightful spot, to which the tallfoxgloves, standing pink in the half-light under the. INTRODUCTORY 7 mossy stems of the trees, lend a suggestion offairyland. The road winds away down the valley, its everyturn revealing increasingly grand hillsides, clothedwith dwarf woods, and here and there a grey crag :very like the Cheddar Gorge, with an unaccustomedmantle of greenery. Descending this fairest ofintroductions to the North Devon coast, past theconfluence at Watersmeet, where slender treesincline their trunks together by the waterfall, likehorses amiably nuzzling, one comes by degreeswithin the region of influence —as they phraseit in the world of international politics—of theholiday-maker at Lynmouth, who is commonly solapped in luxury there, and rendered so indolentby the soft airs of Devon, that Watersmeet formsthe utmost bounds to which he will penetrate inthis direction, when on foot.
