In the meantimethe Mormons began to grow more odious to themasses of the people, and the comparative prospectsof the respective parties for success became veryproblematical. Mr. Snyder died in May, andThomas Ford, a Supreme Judge, was substituted asa candidate, and was elected. At the close of his gubernatorial term, Mr. Carlinremoved back to his old home at CarroUton, wherehe spent the remainder of his life, as before his ele-vation to office, in agricultural pursuits. In iS^ghe served out the unexpired term of J. D.
