Volcanic formation. Historical artwork by William Hamilton (1730-1803) showing a 'little mountain' growing inside the crater of the volcano Vesuvius from 8 July to 29 October 1767. After erupting on 19th October 1767, the volcano gained 200 feet (61 metres) in height. Vesuvius is located near Naples in Italy and is famous for its destruction of the Roman cities Pompeii and Herculaneum, which were buried under ash and mud respectively, in 79 AD. Drawing published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 1768.
