All condenser pumpsand general auxiliaries are steam-driven and they ex-haust into a bank of open feed-water heaters. As the only water available for boiler feed must bepurchased from the city water supply system at a veryhigh price, and is heavily charged with scale-formingmatter, it is important to save all the condensate possi-ble and to keep it free from oil. Consequently, allauxiliaries are turbine-driven except the three house-service pumps, the stoker engines and a few smallpumps. These exhaust through oil separators, and inthis way only a very small part of the steam condensedin the main feed-water heaters or the condensers evercomes in contact with cylinder oil. The only known. HAVANA POWER PLANT—VIEW OF TURBINE ROOM SHOWING LOCATION OF MAIN UNITS AND EXCITERS May 15, 1915] ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL 921 losses of water evaporated in the boilers are due toleakage from pipe and boiler joints and the steam blowninto the stoker grates. The steam piping was laid out in accordance with thegeneral plan of three main sections and an auxiliarysection all tied together by an equalizer or tie-header withsectionalizing valves. This general scheme is followedalso in the exhaust piping of the auxiliaries, the drainpiping and the circulating water system of the maincondensers. The drainage of the high-pressure steampiping flows through groups of traps which dischargeto the main heaters, the low-pressure drains lead to theoutside water service. Owing to a city ordinance which forbids the connec-tion of pumps which draw water directly from the citymain, a storage tank has been provided outside the The electrical characteristics of main generator
