Angina or heart attack. Woman clutching her chest in pain during angina pectoris or a heart attack . Her chest has been illuminated to depict the area of pain. Angina is a severe pain and feeling of constriction in the chest. The pain typically spreads to the left shoulder and arm as in heart attack. Both conditions are caused by a deficiency in the oxygen supply to the heart muscle. The oxygen deficiency is usually due to obstruction of the coronary arteries due to formation of atheroma plaques (atherosclerosis). In heart attack the heart muscle is damaged, and this may be fatal. Both conditions may require drugs or surgery.
