Bunion in the big toe of a 16 year old male patient. A hallux valgus, or bunion, is an abnormal deviation of the big toe, which leads to a deformation at the front of the foot at the first metatarsal of the big toe. The exact cause of bunions is unknown but osteoarthritis, poorly fitting footwear and family history are contributing factors. Treatment is only with surgery.
