Rowe, if we may accept the evidence of the engraving of hismonument1 in Hackney Church given in Robinsons Historyof Hackney1 (vol. ii. p. 8), was a clean-shaven man. The sub-ject of this picture wears a beard. Rowe was Master in 1557,Lord Mayor in 1568 and died in 1570. The details of dress hereshown are of a later period. But more conclusive evidencewas found when the arms painted on the canvas were painting of these is contemporary with the rest of the picture,and they are not those of Rowe. His claim upon the portraitmay therefore be dismissed. The next step was to ascertain whether the Company at anytime possessed a portrait of a Lord Mayor of the beginning ofthe seventeenth century, which is the period to which
