The Theatre Royal, Newcastle originally opened in 1837. In 1899 the theatre was destroyed by fire and was restored and redesigned by the accomplished theatre architect Frank Matcham, reopening in 1901. The Theatre is in the heart of the city, situated at the top of Grey Street, Newcastle's famous curved Georgian Street. In 2011 the exterior, auditorium and front of house areas were refurbished. The theatre re-opened on 12 September 2011 with Alan Bennett’s epic period drama The Madness of George III. - 2013 Civic Trust Award - RIBA Regional Award 2012 - RICS Conservation Award 2012 - Construction Excellence Award for Heritage (North East) 2012
