They formed a procession of men,women, and children, and walked round thelodge, each stooping over the cloth as hepassed, and looking at it. The second timethey stooped closer, and the third time theywere seized with convulsive movements asthey approached the cloth, and each ejectedfrom the mouth a little yellow shell upon thecloth. By the ejection of the shell (whichtypifies the sinful nature of man) the convul-sions are healed, and, after going once moreround the lodge, each performer takes one ofthe shells and places it in the medicine bag. The last scene was a general feast, andgifts of amulets and charms presented by thechief Mides to the child. One of the most pleasing traits in thecharacter of these tribes is the strong relig-ious
