Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838), American mathematician and astronomer. In his teens Bowditch taught himself calculus, Latin and French so that he could study the major mathematical texts of the time, including Newton's Principia Mathematica. During his lifetime he translated many important works on mathematics and astronomy. During his first sea voyage in 1795 Bowditch became interested in celestial navigation. He began a revised edition of John Hamilton Moores \Navigator\", which was known to contain errors, but later abandoned this to write his own navigation book. In 1802 \"Bowditch's American Practical Navigator\" was published and gained him the reputation of the founder of modern maritime navigation. The book is still used today."
