In respect to this barrier the plain with its railwaysystem takes the place of a natural corridor supplying lateralcommunications. ADIGE TRENCH 517 THE ADIGE TRENCH All of the mountain barriers, as well as all of the lateral corri-dors, are cut transversely near the central zone by the greatnorth-south Adige trench (Fig. 122 and PI.
