The gradeof the existing tunnel is slightly descending fromwest to east but the grade of the new line will beon an ascent of .73 per cent, from west to east, witha vertical curve of 700 ft. Interposed at the eastapproach and a downgrade thence to the terminalstation. The grade was determined with a view toreduce rock excavation to a minimum without toogreat interference with the track rearrangement westof the hill. Also OQ emerging from the western por-tal of its present tunnel the Erie passes Immediatelyunder the tracks
