Throat examination. A doctor in- spects a 6-year-old girl's throat for infections that can cause a sore throat. She is holding down the girl's tongue with a flat tongue depressor and looking into her mouth. Common throat infections in children include tonsillitis and pharyngitis. Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, two clumps of tissue at the back of the mouth that help to fight disease. It is caused by repeated infection of the tonsils and is treated with anti- biotics. Pharyngitis is inflammation of the pharynx, the passage between the nose, mouth and oesophagus. This condition is often provoked by a cold and usually clears up spontaneously.
