Refrigerator recycling. Sacks containing plastic and nonferrous parts from crushed refrigerators. The parts can be sorted and recycled to manufacture other new items. Prior to crushing the coolant (refrigerant) and polyurethane foam are removed. The coolant and foam contain chloro- fluorocarbon (CFC) chemicals. CFCs are harmful gases that deplete the ozone layer and can trap heat in the atmosphere, which may contribute to the greenhouse effect. Ozone protects life on Earth by blocking the Sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. International agreements have banned production and encouraged destruction of CFCs. Photographed in West Sussex, England.
